# Background Remover

Remove the background from a photo with the AI background remover, then check hair, fine edges and transparency before you place the cutout.

## Check a background remover result before you place it

A portrait against a plain wall, before and after the AI background remover. The result sits on a transparency checkerboard so you can see what was removed. Check the cutout against the source before you choose a backdrop.

### Outline and openings

Follow the outer contour first, then the gaps: the space between the neck and collar and the narrow area where the jacket meets the shoulder. A smooth outline is not enough if an interior gap stays filled or part of the clothing disappears. The cutout has to show the subject as it is.

### Edges on light and dark

Place the result on the real card color, then on a dark backdrop. A pale halo along fabric, hair or fur can vanish on white and stand out on dark. Download the [transparent PNG](https://potto.ai/transparent-background.md) and judge the edge at the size it will appear.

### Glass, shadows and reflections

Transparent material carries the scene behind it, so inspect the whole object, not only its contour. A shadow may belong to the surface or to the object's form, and a new backdrop will not rebuild it. Compare with the source to tell subject from surroundings.

## Three subjects and what the AI background remover must keep

The same background remover behaves differently on a product, a person and an animal. Decide what must survive the cutout, then check those details first.

### Prepare a product for a catalog

*Chair → Transparent*

Decide which details a buyer needs to see: the shape, closure, label, handles or cables. Check narrow handles and gaps against the source, and compare the edges on the catalog color and on a dark backdrop. A tidy silhouette that drops a cable still misrepresents the product, and a crowded source may not isolate the item you meant.

### Reuse a portrait without losing the outline

*Office → Transparent*

Choose a source where the face and shoulders are clear and the crop you need is already inside the frame, because removal cannot recover a shoulder or hand outside it. Hair needs more attention than a jacket edge, since fine strands can keep background color. Preview on light and dark at the final size and check eye line and headroom.

### Keep fur and small features in view

*Sofa → Transparent*

Pet photos combine fine fur, whiskers and soft focus. Start with an animal that is in focus and distinct from its surroundings; a dark animal on a dark sofa may have no recoverable edge. Check ears, tails, paws, collars and whiskers against the source on a contrasting surface. A feature that vanished is not hidden by the preview.

## How to remove a background with the AI background remover

Three steps in the panel above, from upload to a transparent PNG.

### 1. Upload a source with a readable outline

Add a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 20 MB, using the original rather than a screenshot of a compressed preview. Keep the whole subject inside the frame, since removal does not extend it. Dark subjects on dark backdrops, hair over busy patterns and glass make separation less certain, so keep the original for comparison.

### 2. Remove the background and compare

Remove the background and look at the overall silhouette first, because a missing part matters more than a faint fringe. Then inspect open spaces, hair, transparent areas and small labels against the source. The checkerboard is a preview of empty areas, not part of the file. Treat the result as a draft to review.

### 3. Choose a backdrop and download

Removal costs 4 credits per image, shown on the Generate button before you confirm. Afterwards you can keep transparency, use a solid color or place your own image behind the cutout in your browser at no extra credit. Download PNG for the transparent version, or PNG or JPEG for a flattened composite.

## What the AI background remover does to your image

Three things decide whether a cutout is ready to place: the outline, the fine edges and the source you start from.

### A clear outline around the whole subject

The AI background remover finds the subject's silhouette and removes everything outside it, returning a transparent PNG at the source dimensions. Keep the whole subject inside the frame, because removal cannot extend a shoulder or a hand that was cropped out. Afterwards you can keep transparency or place the cutout on a color or your own image.

- Costs 4 credits per image, quoted before you confirm
- Changing the backdrop in your browser costs no extra credits

### Fur, hair and small features stay in view

Hair, whiskers and fine strands are the hardest part of a cutout. Start from a source where the subject is in focus and distinct from its surroundings, then inspect ears, paws and strands against the original on a light and a dark backdrop, because some background color can remain along thin edges.

- Check the edge on both a light and a dark backdrop
- A dark subject on a dark backdrop leaves little edge to find

### Start from a source that separates cleanly

A subject against a plain wall, like this portrait, separates far more reliably than hair over a busy pattern, glass or a dark subject in front of a dark scene. Use the original file rather than a screenshot of a compressed preview, and keep it beside the result so you can compare the silhouette first and the faint fringe second.

- Accepts JPG, PNG or WebP up to 20 MB
- Glass carries the scene behind it, so judge the whole object

## Background remover FAQs

What a background remover does, how to check a cutout and what the result file contains.

### What is a background remover?

A background remover isolates a foreground subject from the surrounding image. Potto AI provides a transparent result that can be downloaded or placed on a color or your own background image. The operation needs a visible outline and a review of fine edges; it does not guarantee that every hidden or transparent part is separated correctly.

### What is a transparent background?

A transparent background contains alpha information telling a compatible application which areas should show what is behind the image. It is not a white fill or a checkerboard pattern; the checkerboard is only a preview of empty areas. JPEG cannot carry alpha, so download the transparent version as PNG and test it in the destination application.

### Should I keep transparency, use a color or add a background image?

Keep transparency when the subject will be placed in several designs; check that the exported file preserves it and that the edge works on different colors. Use a solid color, from the presets or a custom value, for a simple, predictable backdrop; check that the subject stays distinct. Add your own image only when the subject belongs in a specific scene; the image fills the canvas with a centered cover crop, so content near its edges can be cropped, and perspective, scale and lighting must still look believable.

### Does changing the backdrop relight the subject?

No. Removing a background and building a new scene are separate jobs: removal isolates the subject, and the result controls then compose the cutout over a selected color or image. They do not change the foreground light or create a physically matched new shadow, so a different camera angle or light direction can still look misplaced. Use a separate creative edit when the whole photographic scene needs a new lighting relationship.

### Do I need an account to use the AI background remover?

You can upload a photo and look at the controls before signing in. Removing the background and downloading need an account; the sign-in dialog keeps your photo in place.

### Which files can I upload, and what does the AI background remover output?

Upload JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 20 MB. Background removal outputs a transparent PNG at the source dimensions. Start from the original photo when you can, since repeated saving and resizing adds blocks and fringes near edges, and keep the whole subject inside the frame because removal does not extend it. Download a transparent PNG when you need to reuse the cutout; a flattened JPEG cannot preserve alpha.

### How should I review hair, fur, glass, and the new backdrop?

Inspect hair, fur and translucent objects on both a light and a dark backdrop. Narrow strokes or lettering can be lost, and some of the old background color may remain at the edges. Glass carries the scene behind it, so judge the whole object, and decide whether a shadow belongs in the new layout, because the tool does not keep or rebuild shadows reliably.

### How do I check the background removal cost?

Background removal costs 4 credits per image, and the amount appears on the Generate button before you start. If a task fails, its reserved credits are released. Putting the finished cutout on a color or your own image happens in your browser and costs nothing extra. Subscriptions and [credit packs](https://potto.ai/pricing.md) are explained on Pricing.

### Can I use the result commercially?

Yes, on a paid plan; images made on the free plan are for personal use. Potto adds no watermark to downloads. Remove backgrounds only from photos you own or may edit, and check the edges before a cutout goes into a product listing or an ad, where a missing strap or handle misrepresents the item.

## Remove the background from your photo

Upload a photo, run the AI background remover and check the edges before you download.
