# Photo Enhancer

Enhance a photo by enlarging it 2× or 4× with rebuilt detail, then check faces, texture and edges in the larger result.

## Enhance a photo and check what it kept

The same vintage portrait before and after a 2× enhancement. Compare the result with the original photo: it is a larger derivative, not a recovered record.

*Enhanced · 2×*

### What stayed

The framing, composition and aspect ratio stay the same, and the photo is enlarged rather than recomposed. Output is capped at a 2,048-pixel long edge at 2× and 4,096 at 4×, so the real enlargement can be smaller than the label.

### What was added

Interpreted detail: edges and textures that look sharper than the source recorded. It is plausible, not recovered. There are no exposure, color grading, noise or skin-retouching controls; the photo enhancer enlarges the same way as the [image upscaler](https://potto.ai/image-upscaler.md).

### What to check

Compare the eyes, mouth, hands, clothing texture and any lettering with the original photo at matching display size, then at full size. For a print, proof it at the real print size and crop. Keep the original photo as the factual source.

## Where a photo enhancer helps

Decide what must survive before you use a photo enhancer: an expression, a marking, a face in a family photograph.

### Portraits

*1× → 2×*

Compare the shape of the eyes, mouth, eyebrows, hairline and jaw, and check glasses, jewelry and facial hair. A smoother or more symmetrical face can feel flattering while looking less like the person. Enlarging cannot supply an expression hidden by blur or detail that fills only a few pixels. Review identity before polish.

### Family photos

*1× → 4×*

Sort the sources first and use the best copy of each family photograph, with its date or description. Test one representative image before running a group, then compare faces and clothing with the original photo. A larger file of uncertain origin can be less useful than a smaller original photo. Keep both copies together in the album project.

### Pets

*1× → 2×*

Fur pattern, eye color, ear shape and a collar are how people recognize a pet. Compare the fur around the eyes and muzzle, the ear edges and any distinctive patch. Fine fur can gain detail while changing direction or pattern. Choose a clear, well-framed source rather than a tiny face at the edge of a group photograph.

## How to enhance a photo

Three steps in the panel above. The credit estimate is on the Generate button before you confirm.

### 1. Pick the best original and its purpose

Upload the best original photo you have as a JPEG, PNG or WebP image up to 10 MB, not a copy saved from a message. Decide first what must survive: an expression, markings, a product’s shape. Batches follow your plan, and each image is its own task.

### 2. Choose 2× or 4×

2× limits the longest output edge to 2,048 pixels and 4× to 4,096, so the real enlargement can be smaller than the label. A source already at an option’s limit cannot use it, and one such image blocks that scale for a whole batch.

### 3. Compare, then download

Enhancing costs 2 credits per image at 2× and 6 at 4×, shown on the Generate button before you confirm. Compare it with the original photo at matching display size, then check faces, hair, lettering and repeated patterns at full size. Download, confirm the dimensions and keep the original photo.

## What the photo enhancer does to a photograph

The photo enhancer enlarges a real photograph. These four points cover faces, texture, scale and what it leaves alone.

### Faces gain clarity at the larger size

Portraits are the most common job for a photo enhancer. Eyes, lips and hair strands gain pixels and read more cleanly at 2×, but the detail is interpreted, so expression and likeness need a check against the original at matching size.

- Check eyes, mouth and hands first
- Framing and composition stay the same

*A portrait source. Compare the face with the original at the same size.*

### Fur, fabric and skin texture are rebuilt

Pets, clothing and skin carry fine texture that soft photos lose. The photo enhancer adds plausible texture, not recorded texture, so a fur pattern or a fabric weave can differ slightly from the real thing.

- Compare repeated patterns and edges
- It adds interpreted detail, not recovered detail

*Fur is a good test: compare the coat pattern with the source.*

### 2× for sharing, 4× for a big print

Choose 2× for screens and small prints, and 4× when a small file has to reach a large print. The long edge is limited to 2,048 pixels at 2× and 4,096 at 4×, and the result line says when a photo was scaled to fit.

- 2 credits at 2× and 6 at 4× per photo
- JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB

*A family-style photo. Pick the scale from the final print size.*

### It enhances; it does not restore or retouch

There are no exposure, color or noise controls, and scratches or fading are not repaired. For a damaged print, use [Old Photo Restoration](https://potto.ai/image-templates/old-photo-restoration.md) first, then enhance a clean copy. Keep the original, because an enhanced photo is a reviewed copy, not a record.

- Proof a print at final size before you order
- Do not treat an enhanced photo as evidence

## Keep exploring Potto AI

When enlarging a photograph is not the whole job, these tools take over.

- [Image Upscaler](https://potto.ai/image-upscaler.md): Pick a specific larger size and check the effective enlargement.
- [Image Enhancer](https://potto.ai/image-enhancer.md): Enlarge a raster that is not a photograph, such as an illustration or diagram.
- [Unblur Image](https://potto.ai/unblur-image.md): Judge softness and motion blur without assuming exact recovery.
- [Old Photo Restoration](https://potto.ai/image-templates/old-photo-restoration.md): Repair scratches and fading in a print before you enlarge it.
- [AI Headshot Generator](https://potto.ai/image-templates/ai-headshot-generator.md): Create a new professional portrait from a casual photo.

## Photo Enhancer FAQs

### What is a photo enhancer?

A photo enhancer processes a photograph so it works better for a purpose, such as a sharper portrait on screen or a larger print. Potto AI's photo enhancer enlarges the photo 2× or 4× and rebuilds fine detail at the larger size. The result can contain interpreted detail, so compare faces and important features with the original instead of equating a larger file with a faithful restoration.

### How is photo enhancement different from restoration?

Enhancement deals with viewing size and apparent clarity; restoration deals with damage such as scratches, stains or missing areas. This page enlarges and sharpens and does not repair damage. For a damaged print, use Old Photo Restoration first, which is a separate generated interpretation that also needs comparison with its source.

### Can an enhanced family photo serve as historical evidence?

Keep the original photo as the evidence of what was recorded. An enhanced result can introduce plausible facial, clothing, or background detail. Label the derivative when that distinction matters and preserve the source and context. A sharper appearance does not establish the truth of previously unreadable information, such as small lettering, a street sign, a product label or a face in a scan. If the print can be rescanned, a better scan may preserve more real information than another enhancement.

### Which scales and files does the photo enhancer accept?

Choose 2x or 4x and upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP image up to 10 MB. The longest output edge is capped at 2,048 pixels at 2x and 4,096 at 4x, so a 1,500 by 1,000 pixel photo cannot reach 3,000 by 2,000 at 2x; it is capped to fit and keeps its aspect ratio. A source already at or beyond an option’s limit cannot use that option, and in a batch one such image makes that scale unavailable for the whole group. The result keeps the upload format.

### Can I adjust exposure, color or noise?

No. The photo enhancer enlarges and sharpens; it has no exposure, color grading, noise-removal or skin-retouching controls. It cannot know detail the camera failed to record, and strong motion blur, heavy compression or very small faces leave uncertainty. A better original, a smaller placement or a new photo often helps more than enhancing again.

### What should I check before printing?

Choose the final crop and print size first, because a narrow crop from a wide photo uses only part of the pixels. Check the print size against the print service's requirements, then view a proof at the real print size and compare faces and fine edges with the original photo. A larger pixel count does not guarantee that faces or textures look convincing on paper. If detail turns implausible at that size, choose a smaller print or a better source instead of enlarging again.

### Do I need an account to use the photo enhancer?

You can upload a photo and choose 2× or 4× before signing in. Enhancing opens the sign-in dialog, and the photo stays in the photo enhancer.

### What if the photo enhancer fails?

A failed task shows the reason and a retry, and the credits are released. If the upload failed, use a JPEG, PNG or WebP file within the size limit. Enhancing the same photo again is a new, charged request.

### How much does the photo enhancer cost?

Enhancing a photo costs 2 credits at 2× and 6 credits at 4×. The amount is on the button before you confirm, and failed tasks release their credits.
