Start with a clear face and an expression that suits the use. Ink can turn facial shading into lines, so strong shadows and skin texture may look harsher than expected. Check the eyes, mouth and the nose-to-cheek relationship against the original, and keep the photo beside the drawing. For a small avatar, compare a simpler treatment first.
